Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)
PLATELET RICH PLASMA (PRP) is made from concentrated platelets derived from the patient’s own blood. PRP is perhaps the most widely used form of non-surgical treatment used by top athletes such as Steph Curry, Tiger Woods, and Kobe Bryant to name a few. These platelets are obtained by taking a sample of the patient’s own blood from the forearm area. This blood is then placed in a centrifuge which separates out and concentrates the platelets. The platelets are then carefully harvested and injected into the damaged tissue (mainly damaged ligaments, tendons, and joints). These injected platelets will then become activated – unleashing numerous growth factors, which facilitate activating the healing mechanism of the body. PRP is normally injected and placed into the damaged tissue under ultrasound guidance.
